This Year’s Holiday Bowl Games Features the Cornhuskers and the Huskies Once more
The Nebraska Cornhuskers lost their bid to play in the Big Bowl Championships when they lost last Sunday and fell down to 5th place in the Big 12 rankings. The team which is currently in slot 17 of recruiter rankings was expecting an invite to the Insight Bowl to play against Iowa, a member of the Big 10. Things turned out differently, however, and it was Missouri which got in. That was no great loss for the Nebraska Cornhuskers considering that they are playing in the Holiday Bowl instead. The Insight and Holiday Bowl are the same in prestige but the pay is better with the Holiday Bowl.
The Holiday Bowl game is a rematch against the Washington Huskies. The Nebraska Cornhuskers had to defeat Washington State last Saturday to get into the bowl. Washington University won over UCLA, California and Washington State to qualify. The Nebraska Cornhuskers has played the Holiday bowl for two times in the past. During the last game, they defeated Arizona 33-0.
The Washington Huskies have also participated in the Holiday bowl thrice in the past. The last occasion was in 2007. This year’s playoff continues the grudge match between the two teams. In all a total of eight games have been played, the last one was on September, 2010. In that game Washington was defeated by 35 points. The current score for these grudge matches is 4-3-1 in Nebraska Cornhuskers’ favor. In the previous two games before the September, 2010 match, Washington also lost. Following this latest game, the grudge match is scheduled to be continued next season.
Every year, the Holiday Bowl is mandated to invite two teams to play. One of the teams has to come from the Pac-10 conference while the other should be taken from the Big 12 Conference. The Holiday Bowl is the last to choose the teams it prefers, Ahead of it, BCS, Cotton, Alamo and Insight are made to choose first. It seems that the Holiday Bowl did not have much to choose from this year because only the Nebraska Cornhuskers and Washington had qualified for being invited.
It is not often that bowl games invite the same teams for two straight years. When that happens, it can only mean that those two were the only ones eligible under normal circumstances. If the Nebraska Cornhuskers or the Huskies had failed to qualify, the bowl games management would have had to select from among the other teams that are in the highest 14 positions in the ratings and which have already won a total of 9 games in all. These substitute teams are called at-large teams.
As far as the coach of the Nebraska Cornhuskers is concerned, he are looking forward eagerly to the day of the re-match. It is a continuation of the September, 2010 match and promises to be even more exciting since both teams have become acquainted with each others playing techniques and are certain to have come up with surprise moves. And even if these same two teams played last September and for several times before that, the anticipation of their fans at their re-match is likely to produce a big crowd in the game.
